    '89 mercruiser 3.7l impeller direction

Motor began overheating. Checked for water from exhaust - none. Dropped bottom end to access impeller. Old impeller completely void of fins. Got a new kit, so a couple of questions. Do I need to use any kind of gasket glue on the new gaskets? And when looking down into the impeller housing...

    Water in fuel....

I don't think my motor has a water separator in the fuel line. Did these come from the factory with one already installed or were they an after market purchase? I ask because after replacing a faulty coil, it started right away at launch, but I had difficulty in starting again while anchored...

    1959 Evinrude 10 testing...

Bought this motor for a song. Good PSI in both cylinders. No fuel lines or pressure tank, so I installed a fuel pump to run it on a single line. Checked impellor - OK. Coils etc. - OK. Now to test it, can I use the muffs, or do I need to get a barrel to drop it in to? Please and thank you.

Multiple issues with '55 Evinrude 15.

Don't know where to start. Bought it last week along with the original pressure type tank and hose and couplings. Been sitting 15+ years. Yes, the gas too. (The gas went to the local recycling depot.) Tried pulling the starter rope. Wouldn't budge. Figure the pistons must be seized/stuck/...

    Fuel pump conversion - 1959 10hp. Evinrude...

I've read a few threads regarding such a conversion, but yet to find one for this motor. There seem to be 2 bypass covers on the right side just back of the shifter. I'm guessing I could pop the top one off, afix a nipple of some sort to which the vacuum line could be attached, then just find a...

    1959 10hp. Evinrude question...

Just picked up the above mentioned motor. Model 10018 s/n 53099. Might be me, but is there a way to keep the motor in the up tilted position? Can't seem to find the locking pin, if there even is one. I just assumed there would be one cuz there's one on my '61 40hp. Johnson. Appreciate all info...

Now I'm paying for it .... or maybe not.

I know, I know, I know, I know .... Yup, I did the unthinkable; took the cheap route; listened to a big box store paint 'professional'; and now even the morning dew is making the paint peel and bubble. According to the 'professional', the $13 can of Tremclad would stick just fine to bare...

    Prepping and paint quandry....

I finally got all the paint off my 16' open 3-seater Starcraft. After reading many threads, I'm confused as to which cleaning procedure is best for cleaning the hull just prior to painting. I've read that Tide and water would do a good job; and I've read that 50/50 water to vinegar does a good...

    Overheating indicator lamp...

How does this work? A little history; I went looking for a prop and ended up buying the whole motor for 60 bucks. A 1964 Johnson 40hp longshaft. (no controls) The seller even offered me an electric shift lower unit for 50, but I don't know anything about those types of units. Anyway, all the...

    Ignition wires...

Well, I wasn't being very attentive when I popped the plugs out of my '61 Johnson 40hp model RDS-23, and now I can't remember which spark plug wire goes to which plug. How do you tell which goes to the upper and to the lower? Can it be figured out by tracing back to either one of the coils? I...

    Flywheel stress cracks.

As mention in another thread, it took 3 patient days to get the flywheel off, and once off, I noticed surface stress cracks. I don't need a new fly wheel do I?:( Have a peek and let me know. There are no signs of any stresses on the outside. Please and thank you.

    Long or short???

I have a 16' open 3 seater Starcraft that had a '61 40 hp Johnson short shaft motor on it. I recently picked up a '64 long shaft, same make and power. Any pros and cons as to which motor would be best suited? I've attached a photo of the boat for clarification. The helm has been removed, as has...

    Went lookin' for a prop...

... and gots me a whole motor. A '64 Johnson 40hp model RDSL-26S. I wanted an extra prop for my '61 Johnson 40hp. Not cheap. I was figuring at around $85 or so. But was able to grab a whole motor for $60. Yes it needs coils, and to be rewired, and doesn't have controls, but is clean, 115 (+/-)...

Let's say I wanna install a tach... is it possible?

I had a thought the other night that a tach might be a good idea, but have no knowledge on how to wire one in. I have a 1961 40hp Johnson model RDS-23. Is it possible to wire in a tach? Please and thank you. ....I've attached the schematic for my motor which I hope will help in the...

'61 Johnson 40hp impeller housing repairable?

another aarrrrghhh.....While cleaning the housing, I had a good look and noticed one side kinda distorted. Are these repairable? Maybe squeeze it back into place and use some silicone to seal it on the outer part of that flange? Or get one of those 'Durafix' type aluminum welding/brazing rods...

    AArrrggghhhhh......

So I figured out possibly why the autochoke on my '61 Johnson 40hp carb wasn't working. The last person to play with it cranked the spring so tight, that when I pulled out the last bolt, it snapped me in the thumb - hard at that. I continued breaking down the carb... the two little screws...

    '61 Johnson 40hp, generator queeries...

I have a 1961 Johnson 40hp, model RDS-23. Seeing as I seem to be out for extended periods, 5hrs. or more, or more, (and using marine VHF, and a CB, and fishfinder, and occasionally nav lights), I'm considering buying a generator (+/- $180US off eBay), plus belt, plus wiring, etc., OR ... buying...

    '61 Johnson 40hp ... carb missing parts???

After looking at several parts diagrams, my carb seems to be in missing parts, like the high speed adjustment in particular. Is it indeed missing parts, do I have an anomaly, or has a previous owner messed with it? Have a quick look at the attached photos to understand my confusion. Please and...
