Re: Mercruiser 305 & 888 drivetrain recommendations

Does anyone have a diagram of how the water loops through the system?

Ayuh,... As I said in post #2,... In the Adults Only section...

Btw,... Resize, then edit your pictures to 480x640.... Nobody likes to side-scroll...

To anyone who had to scroll: you need a 1920x1080 monitor immediately. Here is a 23 inch one with 2ms response time for $200 shipped.

snipped[/URL]

That will be kind of a major PITA to use wih my laptop

I must have missed that particular section of the sticky.

Ayuh,... Look in the Factory Manuals....

I don't need a new monitor, you need to follow the iboats posting guidelines....

I like your style Bond-o. Despite being a little bit authoritarian, it's delivered John Wayne style.

Tracked down a fairly fresh 2pc rear main GM longblock for $500. I am hoping I do not run into any surprises during the install. I'll probably just hire out the work for the drive installation. I do not really want to invest in any special tools this early.

I have a lot of 0/1 gauge wire laying around and plan on redoing a lot of wiring. I plan on tackling the instrument cluster while I'm at it. All of the current gauges seem to work, but they retain some condensation. This is unacceptable for anything mechanical. Has anyone had success replacing O-rings on old gauges? I'd prefer something back lit that will look clean at night. Are these blue Teleflex gauges worth it?

The drive looks like it needs too much work for me. I'm going to sell it and buy a running boat.

Those bellows look pretty new- wonder if they were installed correctly?? That might be the source of the leak.

So, say I want to be a total idiot and go way up in power...

383 Stroker 400 h.p 1970 - 1986 $2,695
http://www.usengine.us/marine.html

Should I just go up to a 454 or 502?

What CFM will my factory Mercruiser quadrajet flow?

I'm going to significantly reinforce the transom (probably weld in aluminum bracing) if I go this route. I also plan to convert to a (muffled) through axle exhaust.

What can I realistically expect to spend buying a solid used complete Bravo drivetrain with all mounts/seals hardware? I have a feeling this 383 will tear a SEI 106 to pieces.

More answers, less commentary.

Btw,... The picture of the drive is to close,...
I'm doubting it's an 888,... The sticker stating so is Very Non-factory....

750cfms...

Nope,... just a Non-rotten wood,+ fiberglass is Plenty....

Thru-hull exhaust is Noisy,... It's only "Cool" for the 1st day...

My credit card statement looks like one belonging to a 13 year old motorhead...

I'f I'm going to spend 3500 to get it up and running right, why not spend 6500 and make it a 65mph badass?

Looks like factory to me?? Definitely wasn't the original drive for that boat though, looks like the 898 was replaced with an 888 drive. Also looks like they tried to seal up the gimbal housing with some silicone or something, so it might have had a leak.

Re: Mercruiser 305 & 888 drivetrain recommendations

Bomar,

I understand that I am new to this sport. I sound like a power hungry child because I was one, am one, and always will be one. I am not, however, an idiot. I picked up a very solid hulled boat with an extremely strong transom for a song and a dance. Now I just want to get a solid power plant into it and go have a blast tearing around at the lake. Please take it easy on me and leave informational posts in my thread. I'll go to a political forum if I want to have a meaningless argument. I'm here for the technical knowledge which you (I've seen very informative comments from you, just not in my thread :() and many others here obviously possess.
