I broke down and finally bought a boat.

It is a 1984 Chaparral 215 XLC and has a 4 barrel Mercruiser 228hp 305ci engine with a Mercruiser 888 outdrive. Hull is great, controls all work. The boat cranks up with just a turn of the key, but it was not winterized by the previous owner and there is slight valve chatter. I know it needs a block. All of the accessories on the engine work. I've performed engine swaps in various automobiles, so this should be a realistically tackleable diy job for me. (So much clearance!)

I plan to convert to a antifreeze freshwater system, regardless of engine choice. My radiator choice would leave plenty of overhead and It would have sufficient air directed through it.

Option 1 is to keep all the accessories and put them on a new 350 marine longblock. I hear this carb is the real deal and can easily handle a realistic marine 350.

How much power can this ancient outdrive handle? The other option I was considering was purchasing a EFI LS vortec 7.4 or 8.1 liter truck engine and stepping up to a more serious outdrive. How much power can the back hull of this boat handle? I could weld in additional bracing to significantly strengthen the back section. What kind of outdrive could handle 500 ft lbs of torque for many years?

I cannot stand the idea of running uncontrolled water through an engine I take the time to install. I plan on sacrificing the engine box cover to create a giant vent and running an extremely over-sized radiator. I understand the seemingly needless complications which would arise in attempting to cool the powerplant in a wind blocked environment, but I have worked with creative engine cooling solutions in the past and deem the long term benefits justify the effort.

Ayuh,... Like I said,... That will NOT work...

If you want to run antifreeze through the motor,..
Boats use a water to water heat exchanger....
Not Air to water....
This kinda thing has been going on Forever... No reason what so ever to Reinvent the Wheel....;)

Look up and read about freshwater cooled systems or freshwater heat exchangers. Those systems have been in boats for a long time. It gets you basically what you are looking for. Freshwater/anti-freeze running through the block, intake, and heads.

A concern with boats is the high heat of the exhaust as it goes through the outdrive (will melt rubber parts) or though the transome (might burn the wood/plastic/fiberglass that boat is made from). The exhaust systems almost ALWAYS have water from the lake/river you are in getting pumped into the exhaust manifold to keep it cool on the exterior and to cool the exhaust as it passes through transome and outdrive.

I think the starters and flywheels changed around the time the blocks went from a 2 piece rear seal to the 1 piece rear seal (different diameter flywheel, therefore different snout on the starter). But, otherwise all the other engine stuff should just swap over for you.

Mercruiser service manuals are a free download in the "adult's only" sticky. They will have most of the info you need.

It made my head hurt to even read this idea.

In a boat, surrounded by endless cooling water, and the goal is a water to air heat exchanger.

I'm purchasing this engine.

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM%20Performance/809/10067353/10002/-1?CT=999

"This universal 350ci engine uses a brand new block and can be used as a replacement for most GM vehicles from 1970-85. It produces 260 HP and 350 ft/lbs of torque with a 4-bbl carb and headers. It can be used as a replacement or as a retrofit into almost any vehicle. This brand new crate engine comes with a GM warranty and is covered for 3 years or 100,000 miles in applicable GM vehicles only."

What size heat exchanger do I need to purchase?

Re: Mercruiser 305 & 888 drivetrain recommendations

Will the factory cam in that engine serve me well, or will I be happier swapping it out?

I found water in the 888 outdrive lower, but it spins freely. I'll pull it and open it up to try to track down the source. Which seal kits are available for this drive? I can find alpha seals everywhere, but am unable to track these parts down for the 888. I'll post pictures of the internal gears when I've got the cover off.

I might just do it right and get a new SEI 106 drive. Which gear ratio would I want for this application?

Ayuh,... You'll want the 1.50:1, or maybe SEI calls it 1.47:1...

The cam will be Fine...

FuF..., you`ll need the 1:50:1 or 1.47:1 ratio.
(although a 1.65:1 might perform better behind a car cammed engine )
The odd thing is that the 888 o/d originally not belong behind a 305 (898) but thats another.

Ayuh,... I disagree with That, unless this is an Over 25' hull...

The Difference in those 2 drives are the Stickers identifying 'em,... Nothing else..

Re: Mercruiser 305 & 888 drivetrain recommendations

Is it worth retaining if the internals check out? I've never opened one in my life, but the layout does not look too complicated. How many hours of labor does a replacement of all seals (upper & lower) book out at? Any ideas of where to purchase the seals?

Ya, it's a piece of Cake...

The Seals will run ya maybe $100. from Mercruiser...
The Specialized Tools will set ya back a Couple Grand....

I'll just pickup the SEI (or a used Alpha) and sell this one on ebay. Here are some pics of the project.

Therefor the stickers.......exactly, to identify the difference.
Check the gear ratio chart in the "adult sticky" for the 898 some time!

Nice boat CFFootprint!

Now that I look, it actually has an 888 lower mounted to a Alpha upper. Which seals are the most prone to failure in the lower?

Freshwater Cooling Kit, Mercruiser 4.3/5.0/5.7 Liter
SAN MC328OE

by: Sierra

Fresh water cooling system for 1982 & up 4.3/5.0/5.7 Chevrolet Mercruiser marine engine Kit includes: heat exchanger, mounts, gaskets, thermostat, thermostat housing, hoses, hose clamps, hose fittings, & fasteners Cools block only Remote mount, string or deck mount For tight installations with limited space

http://www.boatbandit.com/freshwater-cooling-kit-mercruiser-435057-liter-8658.aspx

Is the exhaust still cooled through the outdrive when this type of setup is used?

Does anyone have a diagram of how the water loops through the system?
