This is on a 2001 30 hp Johnson 2 stroke. It has electric start, which is a good thing as it does not like to start when cold. It has to spin quite a lot, with both the key pushed in (to activate enrichment) and the throttle lever raised, before it will start.
The other day, we were fishing, trolling for northern pike. It idled OK for about half a mile and then coughed and stalled. The Johnson would not restart. It's a good thing that we had the little Merc kicker on the boat, so we used that most of the afternoon.
After sitting for a couple of hours, the Johnson again started. It seemed to be flooded and I suspected that the spark plugs were fouled. I revved it a bit to clean out the cylinders and clear fouling, and then took it for a full throttle spin. It ran fine as long as we kept moving at a brisk speed. But again, after a minute or less of idling, it quit and would not restart. I tried all positions of the throttle and with and without enrichment. Nothing helped.
Later, I pulled the plugs. They were wet with gas, although they didn't look fouled or dirty. The plugs only have a few hours on them. I'm going to put new plugs in and use a fresh tank of gas next time out. Hopefully it will start and run.
The Johnson 30 has NGK BR7HS plugs in it. Is that the correct plug? I'm also wondering if a hotter plug might work better. Is a BR6HS a slightly hotter plug? Any other ideas for a better spark plug for this?
Also, any suggestions for improving the starting and low speed operation?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
