Years chart confusing

I just bought a old 20hp mercury serial 7130833

but looking at charts the numbers dont match up.

Serial numbers are sequential, you need to look for a range of numbers.

In 1979, the first 20hp mercury to roll of the production line had the serial number 7124213.
In 1980, the first 20hp mercury to roll of the production line had the serial number 7148238.

Your serial number (7130833) fall somewhere in between these numbers. Your motor was built after January 1st 1979 but before January 1st 1980.

It is a 1979 model. The first '7' in the serial number denotes that it came from a Canadian factory.

Tiller gears are worn down and slip alittle (guy told me) after inspecting id have to take the whole motor apart to change it( bolts hard to get)

I placed a wire to shim the gear tighter , the wire is not working its just acting like a shim.

easy fix the long way was depressing.
