Yamaha 6hp cut out

My Yamaha 6hp 2006 model cut out whilst out fishing yesterday but would restart after a few minutes.
I have notice that no exhaust was coming out of the 2 small holes under the engine.
Is there supposed to be exhaust coming from here?
could this be the cause of engine cutting out?
