will a 2cyl lowerunit swap with a 3 cyl unit

i have a 1972 50hp with bad lower unit. i can get a good working and shifting 65 hp 3 cylinder lower unit... but are they compatible?<br /><br />anybody know these weird , useless thing, well not totally useless

If the the height of the driveshafts and the splines are the same it will fit. However, they do have different gear ratios so a change of props will be necessary. Also the 65 hp unit has to be a 72, in 73 they went to a different shift system

I "think" the driveshafts are different (50hp smaller diameter).

what about if i swapped driveshafts from my bad unit to the new good unit? and yes, both are same year
