My 1996 3.0l/LX has been pulled and replaced with a 1987 3.0l that came with no starter. I've read that the older models had the bigger GM style starter. Would that also mean that the original starter that the 1987 3.0l came with a 10MT Delco 11-tooth starter as opposed to the smaller 9-tooth starter that my 1996 has? Will my 9-tooth, smaller style work on the 1987 motor and flywheel? Will I need to swap out the flywheel for it to work or will the 1987 flywheel and 1996 starter mesh well and start the motor?
After asking all of those question I have installed the 1987 motor leaving the 1987 flywheel and mounted the 1996 starter. It was turning over fine but since the motor wasn't getting fuel it didn't start and something "broke" in the ignition since the key won't turn the starter anymore. Only jumping the coil and main battery terminal at the starter will turn it over. And now it won't turn over at all, it just clicks when I jump the terminals. I'm thinking the pinion, since it's a 9-tooth isn't meshing well with the flywheel and it's hitting one of the teeth on it's travel to engage it. However, it was turning over fine at the key for a minute...
What could cause the key to stop engaging the starter?
