Dave if it runs well either way there is something not right with the choke or carb, remove the hood and see if the choke is closing or if there is a problem with the choke linkage and that will answer both questions.

Let me rephrase that. It runs either way, but better one way than the other. THe reason that I ask is that I thought the choke was on in the direction that it runs better. It actully idles and runs very nicely one way and a little choppy the other.

You can see in the picture that the word choke with the arrow points to the left, but which part of the switch needs to point left the bottom or the top?

Dave the choke lever on the outside of the engine attaches to the inside lever by a connection much like a zeus fastener so it can be installed up or down and that make the lever work backwards so you still need to look to know for sure.
