When I was a kid I had a Winchester shotgun that was chammered for 44 or 410, wish I had it back, sold it to a buddy and he sawed of for rabbit hunting Bob

The GA is in Capitals ??<br /><br />Is the 410, Actually a shotgun gauge, as in how a gauge is determined with the # of Lead balls in a pound ???<br />Or, is 410, Actually a caliber, or the actual inch measurement accross the bore/breech ??

EE, a 44/40 cal is not 2 different.<br />44/40 is a 44(WCF) round.

The "410 ga" is really a .410 caliber smoothbore, for shotshells. <br /><br />The Winchester 44/40 or .44WCF is a rifled pistol or rifle. The bullet is .44" and it is loaded with the equivalent of 40 grains of black powder.<br /><br />The chamber diameter is the same on both, .44". The rims are similarly identical.<br /><br />If the chamber is bored long enough it will accomodate both .44 WCF cartridges and .410 shotshells. Since .410 shotshells come in both 2-1/2" and 3" lengths the chamber must be long enough for the shotshell used.<br /><br />Except that one can nitpick no decimal before the 410 and capitalizing GA I don't find anything wrong with it. Several manufacturers, including Thompson Center Arms, offer "snake" guns chambered for both.
