Well darn. Was hoping you'd say 54. The quest continues then. In any case I'll tune this one up and no doubt put some hours on it this summer. I wouldn't have looked at it if he had said it was a 55 and I am impressed with it's original condition and I haven't even cleaned and waxed it yet. Thanks HighTrim. What number would I need to change to make it a 54? LOL. Rick.

According to maxrules.com 1955 would make it a JW-11 with serial #s 1,194,193 - 1,328,372 although they don't mention any difference in US/Cdn #s.

I'm very confident that HighTrim has identified it properly. Not sure how he gets all this info. but I'm grateful he shares it so willingly. JW - 10 was used for three model years in what I've been able to look up. Rick.

Unfortunately the Canadian motors use their own independent serial numbers, so those dont apply.

I am very confident she is a '55. The serial numbers dont lie.

Some crazy things happened during the runs. Why yours says JW10 I cant answer for you.

There are some valid arguments that it is a '54, but based on its serial number I would have to personally call it a '55 in my humble opinion.

Hope this helps some.

Serial numbers don't lie but I've decided I will. I've been looking for a 54 for some time and this looks and quacks like a duck so I'm calling it a 54. See, 54 was the year I was born and that's why I've been looking for a 54. No one will argue based on the JW-10 badge and I'm not going to explain the serial number unless they ask! I knowingly bought a 56 - 5.5 last fall and decided I would just lie about my age. LOL. Thanks again. Rick.

Well Rick, unfortunately your deception is not quite that easy! lol

Your motor has the decals from a '55 as well. They differed from '54 to '55 so you wont be able to fool me! :)

The decals are very different in every way. The '54 had the oiling and starting instructions incorporated into the front Seahorse decal, not on top of the recoil like yours. Also, the side decals are different. The '54 had the white outline of the seahorse, with "Seahorse" in writing underneath it along with the "3", where as your '55 simply has the "3" with the "Seahorse" written underneath it.

The trim colour changed from grey in '54 to the white in '55 as well, but I think I gave you enough bad news for one night.

Enjoy your '54 JW! I wont tell if you wont promise. ;)

Re: What year is a Johnson JW-10 - 3HP

Hey everyone - I really appreciate this thread. (My first post.)

Admiral High Trim - I learned from you today that the little JW-10 I was lucky to find is a 1953 (1075xxx).
Until now, I only knew that it was a ?52 - ?54. Thanks much!

ps - special thanks to WIMusky & QC for their kind assistance in getting me started with the forums.

Get the serial number and Ill tell you the year.
What do you know about serial # 1202363 model Jw-10
My mother and grandfather fished using it, it hasn’t been started in 25 years but was working and been stored properly all this time. I can’t determine the year ?
