What size winch?

Time to replace the old, outdated, non-working power winch with a manual that I can trust. Boat is 22' and weighs approx. 3500 lbs. It sits on a roller trailer and will be used at least once a week all season.

How heavy of a winch do I need? I had no trouble winching the old power winch with a manual handle which leads me to believe a single speed would do just fine.

Any suggestions?

THANKS!

Ayuh,... A Thousand pound winch will be more than sufficent,...
You're only dragging the boat, not lifting it..

Keep in mind that winches are rated using an empty drum. By the time you get 25' of cable on the winch it's not unusual for the capacity to be reduced by a factor of 3 or more.

I have a #4200 winch on my 22?, #4700 boat. The winch pulls it w/o a problem when empty, but it really starts to struggle as you get more cable on the drum. The last 3? of the pull the winch really struggles and is just about maxed out.
