What is this part called and what is it used for?

Hello, I have this part that I am unfamiliar with. It has a rubber hose connected to the side of the oil pan. It has wires coming from it, however I don't its function. Help me identify it, please.

Just my guess...it's to pump the oil from the oil pan when you want to change oil!

But you only showed half the pump!...So it's a half guess!

Afraid I'd only be guessing but will offer a few tips for getting help. Some folks may come back and ask if it's a tractor, airplane, snowmobile, spacecraft, or boat we're working on here. You'll get better answers if you identify the engine and boat when you ask the question.

If it's hooked to a hose going to the bottom of the oil pan, then it's an oil drain pump of some kind. Probably something a previous owner installed, since it's not an OEM item for any kind of engine.
It may not even be an oil pump, and if it wasn't, it now probably doesn't work.
Looks more like a water pump of some sort.

What motor,..?? What drive,..??

Don't look like OEM to me either....

Ayuh,... Is the hose attached to the Side, or the Bottom of the pan,..??

That is NOT a Volvo part.

The right rear side of the pan, where the sump is.

It's used to balance the oil pressure to the ignition fluid for smoother spark.

They're just bustin' your chops.

It is not a necessary part. Like others mentioned, it looks like someothing a previous owner installed to help change the oil.

Yep... hook wires up to that pump and put a hose on the otherside and you've got abuild in oil evacuator. Not a bad idea if the pump is still good. I still prefer having the hose and valve at the bottom of my pan and running it out the seacock.

I explained earlier what it probably was, and no, it's not necessary. Take the pump off and plug the line so the oil doesn't leak out if it falls down in the bilge. There is no one but the guy that put that thing together that knows what the exact pump is.
