What engine oil to use?

I just bought a 1984 galaxy, with a mercruiser 120. I am about to change the oil and I noticed that the sticker on the valve cover day's to use SAE 30. The guy at the mercruiser dealer gave me SAE 25w-40. Is it ok to use this oil, or should I return it and buy the SAE 30.

25W-40 is now the merc recommended oil for all non-catalyzed sterndrive enignes, when your engine was made the spec was for SAE 30

so, first = 25W-40, second = SAE 30
