Hey guys

May be a dumb question but I was curious to know, how other than looking up the serial number do you tell if an older merc (late 80's) is an Xr4 or what ever or just a normal one? Myself and a few guys i know have late 80s 150-200 mercs and were curious.

Thanks

Re: What defines a xr4?

XR4 is a 2.4L, steel sleeved block. Vertical reed front. Carb'd, small gearcase. 1.78:1 gears.

Supposed to be 150 HP. It is the old 175 flywheel rated. Conservative estimate is 162 hp out of the crate, with some room for mods. Stock Compression about 120 at Sea level. Supposed to run 87 octane, really appreciates 92 octane. Built in 88, 89.

XR2 is 2.0 L

XR6 is 2.5 L

I own one. I love it.

hope it helps

John, is there anyway to tell it is an XR4 with out looking up the serial number? Like cowl design or anything else? Just curious.
