Want go in reverse until high rpm

I have a 1990 3.0 mercruiser with a Alpa 1 unit. It goes in fwd with no problem. When I push the control handle fwd I can hear the gears engaging but when I pull the control handle in reverse nothing happen until I the engine speed up around 1500 rpm and then it jumps into reverse. When pushing it into fwd the rpm do not raise up. Is this normally for it to go in reverse gear. I'm new to a sterndrive system. <br /><br />dofunny<br />riverrat@inteliport.com

No this is not normal.It could be as simple as an adjustment or may need a cable replacement.Remove the cotter pin from the bracket and move the barrel forward and see if it goes in to rev. sooner than before.Adj. it so you get the same travel of the shifter for both gears.If it won't shift the same for both,change the shift cable.This will require pulling the drive.Hope this helped.

You'll want to put into gear quickley. You don't want to hear the gears grinding, it should go into gear with one "thunk".
