First off I would like to thank everyone for their very informative posts that helped me narrow down my problem without having to replace every part of my cooling system and spending a lot more money than I had to.
So that my post may be as informative and help others, some background:
'99 Four Winns Horizon 240 with the Volvo Penta 5.7 GSi. Boat runs great but recently would start overheating whenever at plane. Would idle fine, and would cool off immediately once off plane. At first i thought of the usual suspects: impeller, thermostat, clogged risers, bad circulating pump, obstructions in the lines, etc. After doing some research here it became obvious that the problem (a rather common one from what i understand) was the raw water intake line in the outdrive. A leak there was underwater when at displacement speeds but came out of the water and started sucking air at plane, leading to the high speed overheat.
My question for the gurus is this:
Do I have to remove the entire outdrive to replace the hose and the nipple? It is a DP-SM drive, and I'm really hoping I don't have to pull the whole thing off.
I'm quite mechanically inclined so it won't be an issue either way, just wanted to know before I started wrenching. Any helpful tips from someone who has done this before?
Thanks again,
Alan
