need to find out which is the no.1 cyl ? is it on the water pump side or the fly wheel side. also where does the no. 1 cyl wire go on the dist.

#1 is near the water pump side. There is no guaranteed location of #1 on the distributor. If you put the engine at TDC with #1 cylinder on its compression stroke, the rotor will be pointing to the #1 location on the distributor.

Since you can't assume that it is in the original configuration, you have to check.

Why? You can't assume it's not in the original configuration.

Put the plug wires on like they should be and see if it runs,,, 5 minutes max.

If it doesn't run, bucks, backfires, then check to see if the distributor is clocked wrong,,, 30 minutes to 1 hour. You can't yank #1 plug and turn it over with the crank bolt,,, since there isn't a crank bolt. You have to remove all the plugs and turn it over with the alt nut, after tightening the alt belt. A long process for something that is easy on other engines.

What is the history of this motor? Was the distributor ever removed?
