Used Ignition Coil???

I wasn't getting spark on one cylinder of my 1980 7.5 hp Mercury. Turns out one of the magnets on that ignition coil was seriously cracked. I am tempted to buy a used coil on e-bay. Is that stupid? Do coils work or not work....... or do they get weaker over time?? if they get weaker over time I guess I should buy a new coil. Thanks.

Thats not a magnet its a formed powdered iron core, if broken it can cause a misfire or spike(buck) back into switchbox. They do not get weaker with age.

Thanks much for the information. That coil failed the CDI tests so needs to be replaced. I was misinformed about the magnet vs. powdered iron content.

I just bought a power pack with coils off eBay for my 9.8 and they work perfectly. If the price is right, go for it.
