1991 Evenrude V6 2-stroke OB.
Bayliner Liberty (21' roughly 1991 as well)

Existing cable for the inboard is a rack+pinion type.

Need to purchase a new cable for the o/b.

Are they all the same (rack style)? Do all brands of outboards use the same setup?

I'm cheap (poor) and don't want to have to spend a lot of money where I don't need to. Ideally, I'd like to get just a replacement cable, without having to replace the steering portion as well.
Help?

The motor end of the steering is universal. It's the helm end you need to match. What brand is the rack?

Honestly, with a rack that's 25 years old old, I would consider replacing the rack and cable with new. A complete kit is only a few bucks more than just the cable.

Compare the price of kits HERE and just the cables HERE. It can be a case of false economy to put new cables on an old rack. The gears and housings wear and after 25 years, the rack has lost a lot of crispness.

If the boat hadn't been sitting for the past 15y, I'd definitely change the rack.. But other than a smidge of surface rust, everything is pretty pristine.

Thanks for the help!
