SAE 30 weight was what it originally called for i believe.
You will get a bunch of different answers but any good 30 weight should do fine.
I used Rotella oil,it comes in 30 weight and is sold in most auto parts stores or truck stops..always had good luck with it.

Re: type of oil should i use

Bertos, MerCruiser makes a special 25W-40 motor oil for their I/O motors. It is a bit better than straight 30 or 40, especially if you boat on cold and hot days. Since OMC and MerCruiser use the same engines, they can use the same oil.

Use the oil recommended by OMC for the gearcase.
