I have a '98 Pontiac Transport. Wife has been noticing a sound when she brakes so I looked at it. Pulled th PS rear wheel and drum and found the entire brake assy is covered in grease. I assume that this is from the hub and wheel bearing. Haynes says this is a sealed unit which must be replaced. Has anyone done this? Is it a big job? I can do pretty well with mechanical work and have always replaced my own brakes and some trans axles on a Honda. Any hints to make it easier?

It should be no big deal, but I'll bet-pricey.

You'll get what you pay for, in the aftermarket. There is allot of "junk" (Chinese-look alikes in close to OEM boxes) out there sold as OEM.

Two choices:

1. New OEM-GM.

2. Junkyard.

You may get lucky, I believe the Corsica/Berretta/Impala/Malibu and other GM's may fit. Many use the same wheel ends.

Remove the old one and go to a salvage yard to match. You can always replace the brake shoes.

Make sure the spindle didn't cause the leak.
