Normally spar would be your top coat giving you a bright finish. It also does a great job as a base coat sealing the wood to water intrusion then a color coat on top.

hard to do stain after spar on the bare wood unless I use paint.

doesn't matter what you seal it with. key is to keep boat under cover or covered up that is where most of your water comes from is from the sky. just saying
