Tick, Tick, Tick Sound

Noise coming from engine compartment intermittently. When I stop to open the engine compartment to see if I can tell where it is coming from it stops as mysteriously as it started. Sounds like it could be a lifter out of adjustment or I read nonlinear about some type of flapper in the exhaust that sometime makes this noise. It is a 120hp mercruiser and it doesn't seem to affect the engine performance.

Any ideas, similar sounds or solutions?

Re: Tick, Tick, Tick Sound

well, mine has a few tick rattle ticks to it too.
over time i've discovered that the engine latch can rattle if the dog house isn't on just right. the latch is too loose. i've never permanently cured this. i just move the dog house so it don't rattle.
i've had the alt. fan touch the dog house on the inside. that makes a loud noise. again i just move the dog house to stop this noise.
or ya 'probably' got flappers at the top of the exhaust pipe. 'if' ya got them, like my 165 does. they are rubber coated pieces of metal. if ya get an over heat the rubber can melt off leaving the metal parts left. these can rattle sometimes. the reason i say 'if' ya got them is i've not looked in a book to confirm ya do. i'm just guessing ya do. i'll look if ya ask me too.
lastly. my engine tick tick ticks too. mostly at idle and just above. i've never traced this sound down as i've not had any issues arise that i think are related to this sound. so i live with it. my tick tick tick hasn't changed sounds in the 6 years i've had the boat. this is the 7th year and it still tick tick ticks. just w/o ramifications, so far.

check this out. from the i/o section of iboats. http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...utdrives/merc-alpha-one-what-part-605051.html a broken flapper

or this. http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser...sound-mid-rpms-gen-1-drive-165-hp-604965.html a high rpm tick thread.
