Testing Johnson Power Packs and Stator

How do you TEST to see if a Power Pack is working or is dead. Likewise, how do you determine IF it's the Power Pack or the Stator that's the culprit?

OEM manuals have great troubleshooting sequences.
CDI's website has electronic ignition T/S steps as well.

It's helpful to have additional information in order to get you the troubleshooting information that you need: What year/model engine are you working on? Is this a 35 hp model or 200? Single power pack or dual? Optical ignition system?
