I just baught a boat and the owner had put in a steering colom and controls in front of boat and i want to move it back to middle of boat. Can the cables be shortend or will i have to find new cables? Also the steering is very hard now but i believe its because the steering cable is so long that he had a complete loop in the middle of the cable.

Re: Steering cable to lomg!

I have been looking at cables online and they seem so small in diametor compared to mine. Mine is older so i guess it is just the new design.I see there are 2 different types of steering so how do i know wich i have? my control is off about a 87 model. the newer smaller cables will connect?

Steering cables are about 7/8" diameter, with no loops.

Control cables are about 1/4" diameter, often have a loop, or excess, just in front of the motor.

You need to determine brand and type of helm unit and buy a steering cable that will connect, in the correct length.

Then you need to determine the brand and age of controls and motor, and buy the appropriate control cables.
