Steering Cable question

Sea Ray Seville BR 1988 Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One. The steering is very stiff, so I think its a new steering cable. Websites want to know the cable information from the old cable.
Is the info easy to find? Is it at the stern end or helm end. Or does anyone know which I should get?

The cable length and part number is hot-stamped on the cable every foot or so

However disconnect the tiller pin and verify it's the cable and not the drive pivot before spending money
