Stator, power pack, reg/rec, coils

1985 Evinrude XP150 with VRO removed
Motor cuts out never dies kinda just cuts for a second or two but keeps running. Also when this happens it blows more smoke than normal. Guys jsut looking for some help. I have cleaned carbs, replaced all fuel lines, rebuilt fuel pumps. All is good there so i figure it must be electric.

Is there a way to check stator or power pack for function without having the electrical equipment. I know there must be a way maybe not 100% perfect but good enough. Any way just asking

you atleast need a digital volt meter. $20 at walmart. read this. http://www.boatpartstore.com/page34.asp

An intermittant problem like that is going to be hard to find even if you have the proper equipment (DVA meter). You have to be there when it happens.

A good place to begin looking is to see if it happens with the kill wire (black/yellow stripe) disconnected. Be aware that the kill lanyard system won't work with it disconnected, so be very careful.

Pull the controls apart and look for frayed or touching wires going to the ignition switch.
