I've watched the movies Sink the Bizmark and Damn the Defiant. I've read most of Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander series...other then that, I know nothing about boats or boating.
Yet here I am, the proud (well...that's to be determined) owner of a 1979 17' Beachcraft with 470 Mercruiser. She's got a few rough edges, but I love a challenge and it's going to be a father/son project.
I have so many questions, but I thought I'd start with one my son asked. We got it home last night and he wanted to see if the engine would start. I don't know much, but I recall something about marine engines needing to be in the water to provide cooling so I said, "We'll have to do some research before cranking this bad-boy up!" So here I am...doing research.
Is it possible to start a marine engine in general (and a 470 Mercruiser specifically) when it's out of the water? Can you feed water to it from an external source?
I know, I know...you old salts are shaking your heads, "Where do these 'lubbers come from?" Well...we all have to start somewhere.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
