1994 Merc 50 hp.
Start the engine, Bendix still spinning (not engaging the flywheel).
Has to disconnect the hot lead to starter to stop the spinning. Engine running fine.
Got it home then of course it started normally. Started it several times but could not duplicate the problem.
I know it will happen again.
Maybe replace the solenoid first? If it still happens then ignition switch?
Thanks

Without standing beside your motor I would say it is a stcky solenoid.----Cheap to replace.-----Cheaper than 1/2 hr labour at a shop.

Put a meter or test light on the solenoid wire from the switch the next time. If the meter or light shows voltage, the switch is bad. No voltage or light shows the solenoid is sticking.

Verify before replacing a good part.

I cannot troubleshoot it because it is working fine right now.
Is solenoid the highest probability of being bad??
I want to make a preemptive strike before it craps out on me out on the water.

Solenoid contacts fusing together is by far the more common problem but without testing no one can say for sure.
