Starter motor service

Hi

Just pulled starter motor on 1990 90hp boat motor as we not turning over.

Done all the voltage checks to ensure it was starter problem. Found a damaged brush so that is likely the problem.

There seems to be a large build up of carbon caked onto lower part of armature as shown below.

Can anyone advise on how best to remove this without damaging the armature or coils.
Thanks

Emmett

I just polish the brush contact area with emory cloth.

Hi Daviet,

Thanks for reply.

This build up wont affect the motor performance then?

Re: Starter motor service

If you are talking about the build up on the sides of the armature you can clean it with emory cloth also. Unless it is thick enough to hit on the sides of the case, you should be ok.

After you clean it up with emory paper, go to your local parts house and get some CRC Electrical cleaner in a spray can and use that.
