Johnson 150 starter sometimes freezes on me. I hear the clicking but the starter will not engage. After I apply the classic stand by pounding on the starter move it works. Is there something simple I can do to fix this?

Re: Starter freezing

Wiring connections are clean. Gut cleaning it is. Is there a cleaning solution I can use or just a brush?

Re: Starter freezing

Internal cleaning of a starter rarely solves an intermittent problem. Chances are the starter needs a set of brushes. If the commutator is all chewed up because the brushes are worn, then sometimes a rebuilder can machine it to make it work again. As a minimum, disassemble the starter and inspect it. Check the bearings as well. Worn bearings can cause the armature to get sucked to the field windings preventing it from spinning.
