I am working on a 1978 90 Merc, that I've taken off 16' Starcraft and I am putting it on a 21' Wellcraft. Not liking the Merc shifter and decided to keep the shifter already on the Wellcraft.
I no longer have that shifter, and I'm trying to hook up the one on the boat. I bought the conversion kit, but now I realize that the setup on the boat doesn't have the same length of travel, and it's not adjustable.
The cable has enough travel and the engine shifts F-N-R, but the mechanism in the engine doesn't travel all the way to each stop. Does the link in the engine need to travel stop to stop, or is it sufficient that the engine shifts? I am concerned that the gears aren't fully meshed together, but I don't know how the shift mechanism in the lower unit works.
Can anyone shed some light on this subject?
