I realize tools are designed to make certain jobs easier, and with that in mind, my question is.... When reinstalling a gen II drive, is it absolutely necessary to use one? If not, does anyone have a certain trick they use in lieu of using the tool? Thank you.

I don't even want to think about how many hundreds of Gen II drives I have installed. Never tried that tool though.
A spot of grease on the roller where it goes to the guide is enough to hold the shift shaft in place to install it. if it falls, you will see it move and nothing will go together correctly. Just back the drive off and put it back in the grease.

I used the tool ONCE. It sat on a shelf and collected dust, probably to this day. POS!
