Shift shaft linkage??

Hi,
trying to remove my lower unit on my mercury classic 50 but it wont budge theres about a 5mm gap,thats all! someone said it might be shift shaft linkage?? were is that and how do i disconnect? on my other mercury once you undo the bolts it slides out no problem!!

Any ideas, almost breaking casing trying to pry it down!!!!!

I can't say what I have seen on other motors I've worked on will apply to yours, but I have taken off the lower unit on many 60 and 70's - 5 to 7 hp motors and on all of them I had to pull the powerhead and take some nuts off the top of the linkage to pull the lower end off. None of them were Merc's but ya never know.
