Shift crank direction?

I have a pre-Alpha lower unit off a '76 140 Merc. I had to dissassemble to get the prop shaft straightened. Now putting it back together, I don't know if the shift crank should be facing port or starboard when putting the shaft and clutch assembly back in the case. Any help?<br /><br />Thanx in advance.

The bellcrank goes to the drain hole side
