Hello all,

I have a 1988 sea ray with a 4.3 with alpha one. I was having the stalling issue and went to replace my shift cable. Well who ever owned the boat before me must of tried to replace it because when I pulled the lower off and looked in the bolt on the shift cable was stripped. The only logical thing I did was tried drilling it out. But the must have used some kind of hardener because it is in there. My question is besides bye a new one can I just clean up what I have and tap it? And can I do it from the front because the housing is still on. The whole right know is about 3/8 with some of the original cable nut in there. I think the new shift cable thread measures about 1/2. Please any advice is great. I have done this before with no issues but I guess you just get this sometimes.

Regards
Glen

A straight tap is available here or thru a merc dealer.whatever you do ,DON`T DRILL THE HOLE OVERSIZE.
what your looking at is part of the cable end itself, not a separate nut

OEM # 91-95639, 1/4 inch pipe tap but without the taper.A straight tap
1/4 - 18 NPS, drill size 29/64. tapped from the aft (what you see or call the front)

Ok so you drill with the 29/64 and then tap it with the 1/4 correct.
