just a question, i just bought a 2003 175 hp johnson. the motor is rated 175 hp @5000 rpms with an operating range from 4500 to 5500. i know most of the other motors are rated at a higher horsepower rpms. does this mean that this motor is rated low. if i am running at 5500 rpm is the horsepower greater?

Re: rpm and horsepower rating

CKJR,

It MIGHT. HP ratings are at the rated RPM with a varience allowable of 10% either way.

It's best to prop. toward the high end (RPM). Under revving the engine (lugging) is just a detrimental as over revving.
