I'm working on the (now empty) hull of a 1981 Bayliner 2750 Victoria in a resto thread.

I'm not ready to put a new engine in it yet, but want to start planning and looking for bargains.

The original motor became hydrolocked and sat all winter with half of the cylinders filled with water thanks to the PO leaving a gaping hole in the cover of the engine bay that let rain and melting snow flow right through the air cleaner and into the intake manifold. All of the bolt-ons seem to be in good shape however, and some, like the alternator and starter were only a few years old.

The outdrive had used but water-free oil in it, and seems to shift cleanly and all shafts have very little end-play or run-out. Looks to have been fairly well maintained (or the PO was a lucky guy...).

I think it's a 280. The serial is unreadable at this point because of a layer or two of paint.

Here's the profile. Can someone with more experience ID it from that angle?

Anyway, in seeking donor engines, I'd be most grateful to the wizards on this side of the house for opinions, warnings, advice, pity parties, etc. I presume I could find a similar vintage SBC 350 and swap my existing marinized intake and exhaust parts, and electrical components onto it and have it be functional?

Are there viable alternatives to a like-for-like swap that would still mate up to the flywheel cover and output shaft? Smaller displacement but higher HP recent vintage perhaps? (If I can avoid emptying this boat's 125 gallon fuel tank on every day trip, it'd be nice :) )

If money were no object, I'd buy a crate motor. It is however, so I want to end somewhere between there and oar power when I'm done. Preferably something to be proud of.

Right now it's a blank slate so to speak.

It's a 280 outdrive, engine is a 5.7 Chevy. Just get a reman long block, use the Volvo accessories, and new manifolds and risers and you should be set.

Thanks Don. I'd hoped for that.

Any commentary on salvage (previously enjoyed) motors? I presume there's a good reason to choose 4-bolt main over 2-bolt. I've also heard advice that an auto cam might not cut it, but that a truck or RV cam would be better for marine use.

I had been hoping for a selection of donor boats to become available close to me, but despite being along the shore of one of the Great Lakes, and in the vicinity of the Finger Lakes, there seems to be a vacuum in that regard around here. (Or it's a secret club and they've turned off all the lights and are ducking behind the couch so I'll go away...)

Regular V8 marine engines do not use 4 bolt mains. You will be turning at the most a max of 4600, not 9000 rpm.

The only difference between a marine long block and an automotive long block is the core plugs (falsely called freeze plugs) marine head gaskets without steel in them (SS ok) and a marine or RV grind cam (Truck is close).

The rest needs to be marine for safety issues.

Interesting. The original had 4-bolt mains like these:

Wonder if it was peculiar to that vintage.

Good to know I could use either in this application though. What are the difference between marine core plugs and automotive?

I wish I knew whether my current cam was beat. I've stored it just in case I need it.

Some of those real old engines were 4 bolt main, but it's not necessary, and hasn't been since the 90's

Neat. Thanks.

And yes, she's Real Old. Almost as old as her owner.:)

I used to have a 2750 Command Bridge when I was up in Ketchikan. Put a DuoProp on it too.

I find listings for donor boats or longblocks as Mercruiser but almost never Volvo-Penta. Any caveats to using Volvo manifolds, risers and electrical parts on a block originally used/reman'ed as a Mercruiser? Are the blocks identical on all the machined surfaces and threaded mounting locations?
