Replacing the foot on a suzuki 225

I bought a 225 last year that had a cracked foot which was concealed and painted. I did not discover the crack until pulling out of the water at the end of last summer. I took it to a welder and he said he wouldn't weld it because it was too bad and it wouldn't last. He said that Suzukis have a real problem with this issue. Anyway, I found a used foot for $750 and want to put it on myself. I have pulled the foot off of a smaller Mariner, but never a Suzuki. Any pointers before I begin? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my boat is about to start working the gulf oil spill and needs to be ready to go immediately. Thanks

Before I paid for 750 for the gearcase, I would have them pull the prop shaft housing for inspection of housinh and gearcase. The cracked is caused by lack of maintenance. poor design.
