Rectifier

1987 115hp inline 6...

This is a new to me motor and the gray wire that should be on the left/negative/stator side of the rectifier is removed and taped off. Why would they have done this??? Motor runs fine.
Wiring tends to be a thorn in my side...

Grey is usually the Tach sender wire. I would ohm it out to verify that it goes the the tach and thne connect it to one of the yellow rectifier wires.
