Rebuild an old Merc?

I have a 1966 65hp (4cyl), and a '72 or '73 50hp. Both show low compression, 75-90 psi. I would like to rebuild one (or both). I have never worked on an outboard, but I have rebuilt a couple of chevy smallblock truck motors. Should I try it? If so, what shop manual should I look for? Thanx, Mike

If you're gonna rebuild 'um, I'd use the factory manual. It's not quite as generalized as the Clymer & Senloc.
If those engines are running, I'd do a decarb and see if the compression comes up before I tore into them. You can do a search here in the forum and read the rest of the night about decarboning. Just a thought.

c/6

Hooty

Thanx Hooty. I'll try that. Outboards are a whole new world to me. Both motors are running, I just can't get any RPM's out of either one. Thanx again, Mike
