Question about Control box

I have a 76 model 70hp. There are 2 wires coming out of the box. I know they are not supposed to come out, so I need to figure out where they go or what they do. One wire is black and the other is grey. I assume a kill switch or some thing. b Any thoughts?

Its a johnson if that matters.

They are probably there to hook up a tachometer. If they are wired correctly, the gray wire will be from the motor's rectifier and the black will be the ground. There should also be a purple wire for switched (ignition switch) 12V. Most tachs also have a backlight, for use at night. I usually wire mine to the switched side of my running light circuit.
