I'm installing a new waterpump kit on my 1987 8hp evinrude model # BE8BACUD. When I removed the foot i notice there was no rubber oring on the drive shaft. And no notch for one ether. On bigger motors there has always been one. Does this model not use the rubber oring on the tip of the drive shaft right below the splines? And the impeller key was plastic. In the kit the impeller key is stainless steel. Should I use the original plastic key or the stainless steel key? Thanks allot for your expertise.....

Use the key which came with the new impeller. They may be different shapes .

I think you will find that the original OEM key would have been metal and have a round cross section. When I had a impeller with a plastic key it was a triangular cross section. The keyway in the impeller will be shaped to suit the key supplied.

Re the O ring I think you will find that on this model there are a couple of seals in the inner exhaust tube assembly. One is the crankshaft seal, the other the drive shaft seal. The O rng is therefore not only unnecessary but cannot be fitted.
