i have a 1988 70 johnson does anyone know if a 1981 powerhead would work .I found one and if any parts are interchangeable like carbs electrics etc thanks
This is one of those rare cases where OMC made 2 powerheads that actually have the same mounting bolt pattern but are not interchangable. Usually with OMC components if it'll bolt up, it'll interchange.
If you bolt up the 81 powerhead on your 88 midsection you'll have crossed the exhaust and incoming water passages.
Typically, the 56 cube powerheads are black, while the 49s are the same color as the rest of the motor... May not hold true for all, as there's no stopping someone from spray painting a replacement powerhead.
