Is there a poppet on this motor? If yes where? I am getting high head temps at high speeds. This is the same symptom as my last (88 150 blk max) motor had. I replaced the poppet and it was fixed. I know I should get a manual but I just want to get it fixed. This web site is better than any manual anyway!
Thanks, Dead Eye

Anyone? I see there is a round plate on the right bottom of the motor. Is that the poppet? It has two bolts and three groves in it.
Thanks, Dead eye

P.S. Is there another name for Poppet in the parts lists?

I would think that is it. Go to Mercury part
express and enter you sr# and there should be a diagraham showing the parts.
I would definately check the thermostats. Do you have water pressure gauge? It would give you an indication of how the impeller is doing.
If none of that fixes it, take a look at the head gaskets.

Couldn't get diagraham off parts express, I-boats or other sites. Couldn't get the part #. I guess I have to go to the marine store and ask them. Sure wish it could be bought on-line. Marinas hit you hard on parts,
thanks, Dead Eye

According to Dougrussell schematics I can't find one on that engine...

Can you show us a picture of it and be more specific where the cover is... The location you described does match were one would be...

Take it apart, carefully and inspect...

On the doug russel site the pic of the starboard bleed system has ths plate in it. On the pix the round plate on the bottom left is what i am talking about. I don't know what is under it. If I remove to check I may not be able to reuse the gasket.
Thanks, Dead Eye Remove ( ) when copy/paste
(http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...4&block=110&BlockNumberList=230,150,20,30,180, 140,200,300,190,50,160,90,270,250,280,260,0,120,100,290,240,40,130,110,70,60,210,80,310,10,220,170)

There it is!!! Just remove the components and clean any debri... If it is the poppet causing your problem it is not opening above 3000rpms which it is supposed to do to increase water flow though the block and heads it also reduced water pressure when it opens...

You may need to replace the diaphram, carrier, spring and grommet...
