Re: Over built or waste of materail?

Don't get me wrong... I rather be the guy with the 40 Mph boat that can handle a 5ft swell all day long. Then the guy who hopes his 50 mph boat can make it home in a 3ft chop! :)
At the end of the day, piece of mind will Always win! :) Most of the time when I post, my mind is already made up. I like to read the responses to see if ( we ) are all in the same ball park..... Some time WE are all over the place :)
Thanks Again...:)

Re: Over built or waste of materail?

CSM Adds little except weight and cost, the CSM between the the two layers of 1708 does nothing, it's a waste of money.

The veil is very expensive but will make the surface a little smoother.

A better layup would be CSM 1708 CSM, and the only reason for CSM on the top is to make it smooth.

The only reason I can see for having a thick floor would be if there were very few supports under it. But a 1/4 layup on each side is rather thick and heavy. It's about 4 pounds per square foot in just fiberglass. You would be better off using thicker plywood and less glass.

But.....after saying that if you are the type of person that does things to "feel good" about it, it will probably make you sleep better to overbuild it, so go that route.

Soooo you feel the 3/4 oz's of CSM stitched to the 1708 is adequate for bonding and additional CSM is not needed to ensure proper bonding especially on bare wood or on a previous layer of fabric or cloth? I'm very interested in your experienced/knowledgeable answer.

Re: Over built or waste of materail?

They put that amount of CSM on there because it's all that's needed, if more was needed it wouldn't make sense to only stitch that much to it. You only need to fill the gap between the layers of 1700, any more than the minimum really doesn't do anything but suck up resin and money.

Using more on the first layer can make up for uneven surfaces and makes it a little easier roll out, after that the benefits go downhill quickly.

The strength is in the glass, a CSM layup ends up being around 30% glass and 70% resin, 1700 is around 50% glass, plus the strands run in the direction you need the strength. I'm not saying CSM has no value, but when a laminate is engineered they don't even count the CSM as contributing anything.

Re: Over built or waste of materail?

I would change my recommendation on the layup to, CSM, and then put the mat side up on the 1708, probably save several hundred pounds and cost less. Use thicker ply if needed. Boats of that era were rarely engineered, they built them how they thought it might be needed, if it broke they made it thicker...with chop....about the weakest method you could use. Mat adds little strength, and for the weight, 1708 has much better strength than roving.

If you want to go thicker add another layer of 1708 with the mat side up.

Like was stated before, by the time you add in all the tabbing and such, much of the floor will be thicker
