Outboard temperature gage goes up with any accessory use

Years ago I mounted a cylinder head temperature sender and guage for my 90hp. Has worked fine. It's powered from the ignition switch. This season I noticed it would go up with any accessory use, and none of these accessories are powered via the ignition.
I thought perhaps the sender wire was shorting out somewhere, so I disconnected it from the guage but same results. I even disconected the guage light wire, but still same results. My guess is that the guage itself might have an internal short.
Any thoughts? I suppose I could pull it and bench test, or try one from my other boat. Just wondering if anyone had one that went bad internally like this.
Thanks, Jim

you have a bad connection somewhere, probably ground to the gauges
