Hi, whenever I turn the flywheel by hand, the motor makes a strange noise. It is a 1982 80 hp mariner. 4 cylinder, 2 carbs. I have been told this is the compression leaking from the motor. Is this correct? Any info will help, thanks

Can you be more specific about the sound? If your turning the flywheel by hand past top dead center for the Pistons you should here the compression escaping through the exhaust.

As a single indicator it doesn't mean much. It could be normal. It could be a sign of bad rings. it could just be that the engine has no fuel or oil in the cylinder and that will let the air get past the rings easier.

Maybe it is the rubber impeller squeaking in the housing.---And air leaks from one place to another when motor is turned by hand, very normal.
