Son just bought this last year, I haven't seen it. Anyway, took it out and now
he's only getting half throttle. I've never had anything like this so no idea.

Something to adjust? When he gets home from work I'll have him
join here with more information.

Thanks very much

Sounds like the throttle cable is binding up in the sleeve, check the whole length of the cable as installed and make sure there is no kinks in the cable sleeve and that it is not routed with any unreasonable tight bends in it.

Okay, thanks. I forgot he wrote this last night with the throttle photo:

That is as far forward as it will go. It's like it won't engage into gear. It WILL go into reverse all the way though, as in, it will go full throttle in rev.

Put lower into a drum of water well above the water intake,
disconnect the throttle control and start the motor, if the motor revs harder when manipulating the throttle lever by hand found your problem,

have to say that a 15 hp is a very small motor for a 16 ft boat

?----The motor in the second picture appears to be 40 / 50 HP model/

Yes, a 40 hp and the boat had been parked 10 years since the family
needed a bigger boat. His friend came over and pushed the throttle
harder than my son, it now works. They did lube cables up now, works fine.

Last time out he pulled the throttle back too fast to neutral and it hit reverse. :grumpy:
Everything still works normal but there is a clicking in the throttle mechanism,
he can feel it in his hand. Any idea what could click up front, isn't that just
the just the throttle and shift cables? Way too fancy for me.

Thanks guys

Probably just the neutral, fwd, and reverse detents. They click when you shift.

My apologies, I assumed it clicked all the time. He told me yesterday
it only clicks when you move it then stops when in gear. He doesn't
think it did that before, he probably just didn't notice.

Thanks again.

Well... what my son calls "clicking" is more like shifting my 51 Chevy into
second without using the clutch. :grumpy:

After two days staying on an island it is much worse, reverse only in idle then
it jumps out of gear. A neighbor says he thinks it is something in the lower unit,
probably when he went into reverse too fast. Expensive fix?

He is a short video of the sound. WARNING: ONE F-BOMB.

Thanks for any suggestions, I've never heard such a thing.

Going forward it is fine so I told him to never put it in reverse again.

Something ain't right there. Take it to a real marine mechanic before you wreck it completely.....

Yeah, that's an understatement. :) They had planned to rent a pontoon
for today so I told him to rent a fishing boat for the last day, $40.
hope he listens. Then again he's only 44 so ya never know.

He does know a guy who works on outboards but he's a couple
hundred miles away, he just has to get it home Monday for that.

Thanks again

If I have my outdrive (motor) trimmed up to far it will just click when putting it into gear. I heard your video, it's difficult to hear. It sounds like an alarm going off? With my boat if I am low on fluid like oil or just need to check the motor it sounds an alarm? As mentioned previously, can you disconnect the shifter and see if you can do it manually?

never mind what I wrote about the trim on the drive... don't know what I was thinking. The trim has nothing to do with the gears on a outboard... thought I would correct that before I got called out on it, lol.

[h=1]4.3 Merc Alpha 1 Bellows Leaking? Cost to replace?[/h]
renderTimingPixel.png

I have a 1991 Stingray 596zpx with a 4.3 Merc Cruiser that's just started leaking in water pretty heavily from behind the engine when the engine is in the up position. I couldn't pinpoint exactly where it was coming from but it seem to be coming from the area where the linkage and cables come in from the transom.city to city mileage

It started out as a tiny leak but the past day went to hose pipe level leakage. From everything I've read its likely a bellows failure.

If its the bellows. What kind of numbers should I be looking at to have that service done? If not the bellows. What else could it be?
